Hill Country’s Torr Na Lochs: Magnificent Views and Texas Wine
The Saturday before Mother’s Day members of the Texas Bluebonnet Chapter of the Wine Society of Texas were treated to a special wine tasting in the barrel room of the Torr Na Lochs Vineyard and Winery. This May gathering was hosted by the winery owner and winemaker Blake DeBerry.
Although some barrel rooms are quite chilly, Blake and wife Karen provided blankets to wrap in as we sampled a flight of 5 wines made from only Texas grown grapes. Fion Geal, Rousanne, and a Syrah were included in the samplings. Blake told us the creation story of Torr Na Lochs Vineyard and Winery which opened to the public in September, 2015.
After the informative tasting, we moved outside to the large beautiful patio. The expansive view from the patio was gorgeous as was the temperate cloudy day. Torr Na Lochs translates from the Gaelic language to Hill Over Lakes is a perfect name for the winery which sits high above the Colorado River Valley overlooking both Inks and Buchanan lakes. Sitting on the patio was restful as we listened to live music played by the guitarist, sipped wine, and ate the offerings from the food menu. Adding to the wonderful Texas vistas were several longhorn cattle who reside on the property and ambled in and out of view.
The location of the winery and vineyard is off Highway 29 a half-mile drive up a gentle slope. The destination sits 1,250 feet above sea level explaining the stunning view of the valley below. Over the past few months, the members of The Texas Bluebonnet Chapter have visited three Burnet, Texas wineries Wedding Oak, Perissos, and Torr Na Lochs. All three are within a 15-minute drive of each other.
