Previous Events

April 22 and May 13, 2003 • Organizational Meetings • Wine enthusiasts of Midland and Odessa, Texas, gathered informally at the Wine Rack in Midland to form the new Permian Basin Chapter of the Wine Society of Texas. There were eighteen original members, but the first fifty to join will be considered founding members.

June 3, 2003 • Tasting 101 • An introduction to wines and wine-tasting was held at The Wine Rack at 7:00 p.m.

September 9, 2003 • Getting To Know You • A "getting to know you" wine social and tasting at CEED. There will be no charge. Please bring a favorite bottle of wine to share and be willing to discuss it with the group.

October 28, 2003 • Overview of Wines of the World • Members took a tour of the wine world as wines from each of the major wine-producing regions of the world were sampled and discussed.

November 2, 2003 • McKittrick Canyon Wine Hike, Guadalupe Mountains • Members hiked 2.4 miles to the Pratt Cabin picnic area. Everyone shared a wonderful repast of wine, cheese, meats, bread, and other delicacies. The weather was wonderful and the fall colors were at their peak. Spectacular photos of McKittrick Canyon and the Wine Brunch are available.

December 8, 2003 • Holiday Wine Dinner • Members celebrated the holidays together with a relaxed dinner complimented by an outstanding selection of Llano Estacado wines. The dinner was at Venezia's in Midland, with Llano Estacado winemaker Greg Bruni as the featured guest. Many door prizes were distributed, and everyone had a really wonderful time.

January 20, 2004 • The Nose Knows • We will discuss the workings of the human nose and how we smell aromas, then attempt to identify the aromas that are common to wines. This is challenging and a lot of fun. Announcement: the Permian Basin Chapter now has 36 members.

February 24, 2004 • You Be the Judge • Putting our new knowledge and skill in tasting wines to the test, we judged six wines of the same variety and vintage and picked our favorites. Scoring was by the UC-Davis 20-point scale. Most participants picked the $30 bottle as best and $4 bottle as worst! The chapter now has 40 members.

June 22, 2004 • Tasting of South African Wines • We tasted six of the many South African wines imported by Iron Wood Trading Company, a new Texas wine distributorship headquartered in Midland. Owner C. J. Sibert was present to describe the wines to members and guests, most of whom had never experienced the excellent wines from this emerging wine-producing region.

September 21, 2004 • Getting To Know You Tasting • Everyone brought their own bottle of wine to share and a good time was had by all. Dozens of wines were available to taste.

October 19, 2004 • From Vine to Wine • Jim Evans helped us plant an imaginary vineyard, build an imaginary winery, and make imaginary wine. A look at everything that happens from putting a grape vine in the ground to putting a cork in a bottle of wine. And since imagination only goes so far, we will have real wines available for your tasting pleasure in an informal classroom format with lots of time for discussion and questions.

November 7, 2004 • McKittrick Canyon Wine Hike, Guadalupe Mountains • A repeat of the great field trip and oenological and culinary delight of last year. Our chapter now has 52 members.

December 7, 2004 • Holiday Wine Dinner • A repeat of the wonderful time we had in 2003. Many door prizes were awarded, and everyone experienced a fantastic dinner. This year we met at the Garlic Press in Midland, and were served four Bonny Doon wines.

February 22, 2005 • Comparative Wine Tasting • Pinot Noir and Red Burgundy • Steven Schafersman discussed the characteristics of Pinot Noirs, reasons and methods to formally taste and evaluate wines, and different methods to rate wines. The survey at the end of the meeting confirmed that members want to have more wine class-tastings like this to compare and evaluate other varietals. The Permian Basin chapter now has over 60 members.

March 21, 2005 • Big Three Reds • Jan Oberle helped us taste five red wines.

April 15-17, 2005 • Texas Hill Country Winery Tour • Travel to Fredricksburg Friday for evening wine dinner, spend Saturday touring wineries, another wine dinner in the evening, then stop at more wineries on the Sunday drive home. Pam Boring planned this.
